Disassemby Guides: IIci / IIcx / Quadra 700

History

The IIci/IIcx case design later appeared on the Quadra 700 (albeit with different shaped reset/interrupt switches). Despite the fact the IIci/IIcx is designed to be sat flat (which the Quadra 700 stands vertical), they are actually the same case.

This job will require one cross head (Philips) screwdriver.

  Step 1
Our patient for the day. The first thing to do is, naturally, disconnect it from the mains supply.

  Step 2
Remove the case screw (a) from the back of the case.

  Step 3
Take hold of the two case tabs (a and b) and unclip them - the top of the case should now easily lift off.

  Step 4
Remove any NuBus cards, and for IIcis and IIcxs, remove the cache card (if one's fitted).

  Step 5
Removing the power supply can be awkward until you know what you're doing. The PSU is clipped onto the drive chassis and you need to feel around underneath it until you find a small plastic clip (a). Press this with one hand, and with the other, work the PSU upwards and out of the case (if you have small hands then you can usually get in behind the two drives).

  Step 6
The drive chassis is held in place with a single cross-head screw (a) - this needs to be taken out if we're to go any further.

  Step 7
Disconnect the drive cables (the data cables and the power cable) and then find the plastic clip that holds the drive chassis onto the case (a). Unclip this and the drive chassis should come free.

  Step 8
Disconnect the speaker connection (a) and then remove the speaker unit itself by pressing the plastic tab (b). With (b) pressed, the speaker unit can be rotated back towards the motherboard - it won't have to go far until it becomes free.

  Step 9
Remove the reset/interrupt switch by pressing forward and lifting upwards on the central tab (a) to unhook the back of the plastic. Now press each of the forward tabs (b, c and d) to release the front of the plastic. It should now lift out. Extreme care needs to be taken to avoid snapping the plastic but once you manage to do it, it becomes very simple.

  Step 10
The motherboard can now be slid forward until it's free of its four retaining clips (a). If the board won't slide forward enough, slide it as far forward as it will go and then apply a little upwards force so that it comes free (the top right area next to the RAM seems to be the sticking point). It can then be lifted straight out!

  Step 11
We now have one totally stripped machine.

  Step 12
The drive chassis contains the floppy drive and hard drive and both can be removed. For the hard drive, press the two tabs (a and b) inwards and the drive should lift straight out (clips and all). To remove the floppy drive, lift tab (c) and slide the drive forward. It's only held in place by two forward lugs and one at the back so it needs to slide about 1cm before it's totally free and will fall awya from the chassis. When putting it back together you might find it easier to turn the drive chassis upside down.
