Disassemby Guides: IIvi / IIvx / Centris 650

History

The IIvi/IIvx case design later appeared on the Centris 650 and was the first Mac to use a PC style metal case (as opposed to all plastic).

This job will require one flat head screwdriver, and one cross head (Philips) screwdriver.

  Step 1
Our patient for the day. The first thing to do is, naturally, disconnect it from the mains supply.

  Step 2
Remove the case bolt (a) at the back of the case. The screw is spring loaded but can't fall out so there's no need to worry about losing it.

  Step 3
Slide the metal case forward about 1.5 inches - it should just then lift straight up.

  Step 4
Remove any NuBus cards so that all of the slots are free.

  Step 5
Disconnect the ribbon cables for the hard drive and floppy drive, as well as the power cable, and remove them the machine. This should reveal two screws at the back of the drive units (a and b). Remove these and the two drives should lift out.

  Step 6
Remove the power supply bolt on the back of the machine.

  Step 7
Grab hold of the power supply and unclip the metal retaining clip that holds it in place (a). The PSU should now lift out but it may take some work to free it up.

  Step 8
Remove the two screws that hold the drive chassis in place (a and b).

  Step 9
The drive chassis will now swung upwards and it needs to be swung through 90 degrees. It should now just pop out. Note: When you put the chassis back in, make sure that the bottom of the chassis sits INSIDE it's bracket at the bottom towards the back (a).

  Step 10
Remove the reset/interrupt switch by pressing forward and lifting upwards on the central tab (a) to unhook the back of the plastic. Now press each of the forward tabs (b, c and d) to release the front of the plastic. It should now lift out. Extreme care needs to be taken to avoid snapping the plastic but once you manage to do it, it becomes very simple.

  Step 11
Disconnect the speaker cable (a) and, if applicable, the CD Audio cable (b). Remove the screw in the centre of the motherboard (c). Press down the two light grey tabs (d) at the front of the motherboard. Now slide the motherboard forward, This may take some work but don't force it, simply work the board back and forth until it slides clear of the of the four retaining clips (e). Lift the motherboard up and out.

  Step 12
One totally disassembled machine.
